Trip Cancellation

If You cancel Your Trip prior to the Scheduled Departure Date, We will reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, for unused, forfeited, prepaid non-refundable Payments or Deposits for the Travel Arrangements You purchased for Your Trip, provided the cancellation occurs while coverage is in effect for You and is due to any of the following covered Unforeseen reasons, as defined:

  1. Your, or a Family Member’s, or a Traveling Companion’s, or a Business Partner’s death that occurs before departure on Your Trip;
  2. Your, or a Family Member’s, or a Traveling Companion’s, or a Business Partner’s Sickness or Injury, that: a. occurs before departure on Your Trip; b. is examined and treated by a Physician prior to cancellation unless it is not reasonably possible to do so; and c. as certified by a Physician, results in medical restrictions so disabling as to cause You to cancel Your Trip.
  3. Sickness, Injury, or death of Your Child Caregiver, which results in medically imposed restrictions as certified by a Physician at the time of loss preventing You from participating in the Trip. A Physician must advise the Child Caregiver is unable to provide basic childcare services while You are on Your Trip on or before the Scheduled Departure Date;
  4. You or Your Traveling Companion must cancel Your Trip due to Other Covered Events as defined, provided such circumstances occur while coverage is in effect.

We will reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, for the unused, forfeited, prepaid non-refundable Payments or Deposits for the Travel Arrangements You paid for Your Trip, when You cancel Your Trip prior to Scheduled Departure Date for any reason not otherwise covered by this certificate, provided the following conditions are met:

  1. You purchase the Cancel for Any Reason Benefit within the Time Sensitive Period; and
  2. You cancel Your Trip no later than 2 days prior to the Scheduled Departure Date of Your Trip.

This Optional Cancel for Any Reason Benefit does not cover failure of the Retail Travel Supplier to provide the bargained-for Travel Arrangements due to cessation of operations for any reason. See the Plan Document for full details.

Trip Interruption

If You must start Your Trip late or are unable to complete Your Trip, We will reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, for the unused, forfeited, prepaid non-refundable Payments or Deposits paid for the land or water Travel Arrangements You purchased for Your Trip plus the Additional Transportation Cost paid to:

  1. join Your Trip if You must depart after Your Scheduled Departure Date or travel via alternate travel arrangements; or
  2. rejoin Your Trip from the point where You interrupted Your Trip to the next Scheduled Destination; or
  3. transport You to Your originally scheduled Return Destination of Your Trip.

The benefit payable for the above will not exceed the cost of a one-way economy airfare (or first or business class, if the original tickets were first or business class) by the most direct route less any refunds paid or payable for Your unused original tickets. Trip Delay (6 hrs.)

We will reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, for the unused, forfeited, prepaid non-refundable Payments or Deposits for the land or water Travel Arrangements, Reasonable Additional Expenses, if Your Trip is delayed at least 6 consecutive hours from the original departure time to either:

  1. join Your Trip if You must depart after Your Scheduled Departure Date or travel via alternate travel arrangements;
  2. rejoin Your Trip from the point where You interrupted Your Trip to the next Scheduled Destination;
  3. transport You to Your originally scheduled return or final destination of Your Trip.

If You miss Your Trip departure because Your arrival at Your Trip destination is delayed for at least 3 consecutive hours, due to:

  1. any delay, cancellation or mechanical breakdown of regularly scheduled Common Carrier;
  2. Inclement Weather that is documented;
  3. Quarantine, hijacking, Strike, Natural Disaster, terrorism or Civil Disorder or Riot.

We will reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, for:

  1. Additional Transportation Cost incurred by You to join the departed Trip;
  2. unused, forfeited, prepaid non-refundable Payments or Deposits paid to the Travel Supplier for the land or water Travel Arrangements You purchased for Your Trip.

We will reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, for the change fee charged by a Common Carrier for changing a ticket or the fees assessed by Your Travel Supplier for changing Your original Travel Arrangements prior to the Scheduled Departure Date for covered Unforeseen reasons: 1. listed under Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption. Single Occupancy Supplement

We will reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, for the additional cost incurred as a result of a change in the per person occupancy rate for prepaid non-refundable Travel Arrangements if a person booked to share Accommodations with You cancels or interrupts his/her Trip due to any of the covered Unforeseen reasons or Other Covered Events shown in Your Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption section(s) and You do not cancel or interrupt Your Trip. Proof of cancellation or interruption by a person booked to share Accommodations with You is required. Baggage and Personal Effects

We will reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, if Your Baggage and Personal Effects, which are lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed during Your Trip less any amount paid or payable by a Common Carrier, hotel, Travel Supplier or any other party responsible for Your loss, provided You have taken all reasonable measures to protect, save and/or recover Your property at all times. We will also reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, for fees associated with the replacement of Your passport, visas and other travel documents which are lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed during Your Trip and for charges and interest incurred due to unauthorized use or replacement of Your lost or stolen credit cards if such use or loss occurs during Your Trip, subject to verification that You have complied with all conditions of the credit card company. Baggage Delay (12 hrs.)

We will reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, for the cost of Necessary Personal Items purchased by You while on Your Trip, if Your checked Baggage is delayed or misdirected by a Common Carrier for at least 12 consecutive hours or more from Your time of arrival at a Scheduled Destination other than Your Return Destination. Accident & Sickness Medical Expense (Primary Coverage)

Benefits will be paid for Medical Expenses incurred by You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, subject to the following: a. benefits will be payable only for Medical Expenses resulting from a Sickness that first manifests itself or an Injury that occurs while on Your Trip and requires treatment in person by a Physician; b. Sickness must first commence or manifest itself and Injury must first occur while on Your Trip; c. only Medical Expenses incurred by You during Your Trip will be reimbursed. Medical Expenses incurred after You return from Your Trip are not covered. If You suffer one or more Injury or Sickness while on the same Trip, the maximum amount payable for all Injuries or Sicknesses will not exceed the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits. Dental Expense Sublimit

Covers emergency dental treatment incurred during Your Trip due to an Accidental Injury to sound natural teeth. Dental expenses incurred after Your Trip is completed are not covered. See the Plan Document for full details.

Evacuation & Repatriation of Remains

Benefits will be paid, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, when You suffer a Sickness, Injury, or loss of life, during Your Trip, for the following:
Emergency Medical Evacuation:
We will pay for the Usual and Customary transportation expenses for an Emergency Medical Evacuation, to the nearest suitable Hospital or medical facility where Medically Necessary treatment is available to treat an Unforeseen Sickness or Injury provided: 1. the local attending Physician and Our designated Travel Assistance Services Provider determine that Your condition is acute, severe or life threatening; and 2. that adequate Medically Necessary treatment is not available in Your immediate area.
Medically Necessary Repatriation:
Following an Emergency Medical Evacuation or a covered Injury or Sickness, We will pay for Medical Evacuation expenses to return You to Your point of origin, Your Primary Residence, or to a Hospital or medical facility closest to Your Primary Residence capable of providing continued treatment, if Your local attending Physician and Our designated Travel Assistance Services Provider determine that it is Medically Necessary.

Accidental Death & Dismemberment (24-Hour)

We will pay the percentage of the Principal Sum indicated in the Table of Losses of the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits when You, as a result of an Injury caused by an Accident occurring during Your Trip, sustained a Loss shown in the Table of Losses. The Loss must occur within 181 days of the date of the Accident, which caused Injury. The Accident must occur while You are on Your Trip and is covered under this certificate. If more than one Loss is sustained by You as a result of the same Accident, only one amount, the largest applicable to the Losses incurred, will be paid. We will not pay more than 100% of the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Scheduled of Benefits for all Losses due to the same Accident. See the Plan Document for full details.

Included and applies if payment for plan is received within 14 days of initial trip deposit receipt.

Pre-Existing Medical Condition Exclusion Waiver applies if all of the following conditions are met:
a. Your plan cost is received within the Time Sensitive Period; and
b. You are medically able and not disabled from travel at the time your plan cost is paid based on assessment of a physician.

1. When should I buy travel insurance?

Buy as soon as possible for maximum coverage. Your Trip Cancellation coverage is effective at 12:01 a.m. the day after you purchase your plan.

To be eligible for the Pre-Existing Medical Condition Exclusion Waiver and Cancel for Any Reason optional upgrade, you must purchase the plan or CFAR benefit within 14 days of the date your initial trip payment is received. Other terms apply.

2. What if I miss the 14-day early purchase period?

You may still purchase coverage at any time prior to departure, however, the coverage would not include the early purchase benefits.

3. Can I cancel the plan after I purchase it?

The plan can be cancelled for a full refund within 15 days of the plan purchase date as long as you have not traveled, incurred a loss or had a claim during this time. Plan is non-refundable after 15 days from purchase date.

4. What if my dates or trip plans change, or there is an increase in Trip Cost?

Notify USI Travel Insurance Services in writing by email, fax or mail of the new travel arrangement costs you want to insure and include the additional plan cost. Please include a daytime phone number and your Confirmation Number. 5. I'm traveling with a friend. Am I covered if my friend cancels their trip?

A "Traveling Companion" means a person or persons whose name(s) appear(s) with yours on the same Travel Arrangements and with whom you intend to travel during the Trip. A group or tour leader is not considered a Traveling Companion, unless the Insured is sharing room accommodations with the group or tour leader. If your Traveling Companion, as defined, cancels his or her Trip for a reason covered by the plan and you decide not to take your Trip, your prepaid, non-refundable travel arrangements may be covered. 6. Will the plan cover Pre-Existing Medical Conditions?

If you purchase your plan within 14 days of the date your initial payment or deposit for your trip is received and you are not disabled from travel at the time your plan cost is paid, the Pre-Existing Medical Conditions Exclusion is waived. For a complete explanation of the Pre-Existing Medical Conditions Exclusion waiver, please review the plan document for your state of residence.

7. What does the Cancel For Any Reason benefit cover?

If you purchase the Travel Protection Plan with optional CFAR upgrade, you can cancel for any reason not already covered by your plan, provided you cancel no later than 48 hours prior to your trip’s scheduled departure. If you are forced to cancel for a reason not otherwise covered by your plan, Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) coverage will reimburse you 75% of your prepaid, forfeited, non-refundable payments for the insured Trip arrangement(s) up to the maximum benefit shown on the Schedule of Benefits. To be eligible for this benefit, you must purchase the plan with CFAR within 14 days of the date your initial payment or deposit for your trip is received. This Optional Cancel for Any Reason Benefit does not cover the failure of your Retail Travel Supplier to provide the bargained-for Travel Arrangements due to cessation of operations for any reason. 8. Can I add the Cancel For Any Reason benefit after I buy the plan?

The Cancel For Any Reason optional benefit is available for purchase at an additional cost if you purchase the plan within 14 days of the date your initial trip payment/deposit is received. CFAR must be added at the time of initial plan purchase. CFAR is not available to residents of NY.

9. What if I don't want to take my trip because of terrorist attacks?

The plan provides Trip Cancellation coverage if a terrorist incident occurs before your trip and within 30 days of your scheduled departure date in a city listed on your scheduled itinerary. Additional terms apply.

10. How far in advance can I buy my plan?

The travel protection plan is available for purchase up to 18 months before your scheduled departure date.

11. What is the maximum trip cost per person?

The maximum trip cost you can insure is $25,000 per person.

12. How much of my trip cost should I insure?

We recommend you insure ALL pre-paid travel arrangements that have any cancellation penalties or restrictions.

13. Do I need to insure my airfare cost?

If your airfare is subject to a cancellation penalty or restriction (most are), we recommend that you insure it.

14. Can I insure my frequent flyer miles?

No, frequent flyer miles cannot be insured.

15. Can I choose the benefits I wish to purchase? For example, can I buy Trip Cancellation coverage only?

No. The plan benefits are pre-selected. The Cancel For Any Reason upgrade is optional, and may be added to your plan if you meet the requirements.

16. Are there any restricted destination countries?

Yes. Travel to Belarus, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Russia, Syria, North Korea, Yemen, Afghanistan, Haiti, Myanmar and Sudan is restricted. Israel is not completely excluded, but CFAR coverage is not available if Israel is the destination country.
